Snow Trip 2022

This one is perfect for Australian snow trip newbies for tips and my skiing skills will give the veterans of the cold something to have a giggle about. When I was invited on this chilly adventure I didn’t even have to think twice about it before I said yes! I had never seen snow in real life before and was soooo excited to have the opportunity 🙂 The two main Australian snow trip locations are Perisher Ski Resort and Thredbo Ski Resort, these are located within the Mt Kosciusko National Park in the NSW Snowy Mountains. While there is a local battle for the title of best ski resort, our University trip decided that Thredbo was the chosen one *insert Star Wars Meme* (if you know you know 😉).

Our adventure started at the ridiculously early hour of 5am on the 8th of September 2022 where we had to meet the bus and load our bags on before finding our seats for our 6 hour ride. When we all sat down we were given the most ADORABLE ski trip beanie which I absolutely loved, if I’m being honest it totally made my morning even greater haha. After a bit of settling in the bus took off and we were in our way!

Our beautiful beanies

I am notorious for falling asleep almost anywhere when travelling so of course not even an hour or two into the drive I was practically dead to the world until we reached our first pit stop in Goulburn at around 10:30am to grab some morning tea at the town maccas. If you’re ever in goulburn town make sure you check out The Big Merino standing over 3 storeys high, it’s a sight to see 🙂

We hopped back on the bus and headed towards our motel for the trip! The accommodation we stayed in was more suited to large groups of students and was located in an area named Berridale which is about a 1 hour drive from the Thredbo Ski Resort which would normally have been suuuuper annoying to drive that far each day but getting on the bus with a group of friends and having the excitement of heading to the snow was amazing!

When we arrived at our accommodation we broke into our group rooms and went to unpack and get to know each other. I highly highly recommend getting to know any new people that will be around you on a group trip, it just makes the experience that much better!

Now for the exciting stuff, THE SNOW!! When I say that I cried at the first sight of it in the distance I am not joking, I got so excited that I couldn’t contain it all in. We parked and grabbed all our skiing/ snowboarding gear off the bus and headed towards the beautiful snow. The first thing i did was drop my stuff and go make a snowball, I’m not sure why a snowball was my first choice but I absolutely loved everything about it. Now enough about my freak out session.

If you are a first timer I HIGHLY recommend taking ski or snowboarding lessons, if you don’t I would put money on the fact that you will be falling all over the place most of the time you are on the slopes. They are also super fun if you get the right instructor! You can book these through the Thredbo website and costs around $90.00.

Excited Kristina seeing snow for the first time 😁

Once the lessons were completed we were free to ski at will 🙂 We decided to spend the rest of the first day skiing down the smaller slopes but once the second day arrived we found some random courage and decided to go up to the larger slopes. This, my friends, is where the tragedy of me dropping my ski pole into the abyss occurred. It was GONE and I was travelling higher and higher on this ski lift freaking out cause I had only 1 days worth of skiing under my belt. Luckily the ski rescue man felt bad for me and gave me his ski pole to help me down the hill but I still managed to tumble about 3/4 of the way down, RIP my braincells.

Have a look at me FINALLY making some progress on this hill, feel free to laugh at me not with me here.

Once we were at the bottom we decided to grab some food from the little bar on this hill before catching a Gondola back to the bottom where we relaxed for the rest of the day before ending the snow adventure and heading back to the Motel. The rest of our trip had a few parties, a peacock spotting and adventures into Jindabyne town which I recommend putting on your snow trip itinerary!

Pro Tip: Check out Thredbo Village’s highest bar which sits at 1937m high. Use the various chairlifts to get up there and grab yourself a drink 🙂
